Cape Clogs -- the Floral Variety

A little secret: I've always wanted to own a pair of clogs. Ever since a good friend of mine from high school, Jenny, -- who happens to be one of the smartest people I've ever known in my life -- wore a pair throughout our entire senior year I've longed for a pair for myself. Jenny ended up going to Duke. Hmm. I wonder where she is today. My suspicion is she's probably still rocking the clogs and just being one big brain.

Imagine my excitement when I got a chance to review Cape Clogs, some of the greatest clogs from Sweden. My dream of wearing clogs would finally be realized. I was in heaven and still am. I love them!

I decided to get the Cherry Blossom Cape Clogs since spring is just around the corner (shown above). I have to admit, the leather upper was a little stiff when I first slipped them on, but what great shoe doesn't need to be broken in first? After wearing them for a few days, they are some of the most comfortable shoes my feet has ever been acquainted with. What I like most about these clogs is that they are beautifully designed and you also can clearly see that the wood is hand carved. It's a simple shoe, but very well made. Now I find myself wearing my Cape Clogs leisurely around my home throughout the day. As someone who holds comfort dear none of my other shoes hold this honored distinction. They're snug and comfortable and fit my feet perfectly. Whoopi Goldberg, Gayle King, Brooke Shields, and Meredith Viera agree with me. They're fans of Cape Clogs, too.

In the Motherhood - Coming March 26 on ABC

I have to admit, I'm a little excited about In the Motherhood, ABC's upcoming comedy about, you guessed it, motherhood. ABC and the show's producers are putting a different twist on the show by allowing real mothers to share their stories and their experiences may actually wind up woven into an episode. Pretty cool.

I've been watching some of the In the Motherhood clips for months, but now that I've noticed a huge ad push on the major mom blogs I've decided to take a look again. The show looks promising and I can't wait to watch it even though I don't have a TV. Wait. That might be a problem unless, of course, ABC runs the show online as well. One can hope.

Note: This post was written solely due to my interest in In the Motherhood. I wasn't pitched and definitely not paid for this mention. I'm simply interested to see how this show will turn out.

Why I'm Excited to Work With EA Sports and EA Sports Active

In early April I will be joining five other bloggers, Renee from Cutie Booty Cakes, Julie from Cool Mom Guide, Jessica from Jessica Knows and Monica from Mommy Brains Report and Donald from DadsCenter.org on a spa retreat weekend in Santa Barbara, CA where we'll learn all about EA's new fitness game, EA Sports Active created for the Nintendo Wii. We'll learn how EA Sports Active works and then we'll all embark on a 30-day challenge to reach our individual fitness goals and you won't miss a moment. We'll all be blogging, microblogging, and vlogging our progress. As you can imagine, it's very exciting.

I'm thrilled to be working with EA largely because I'm a gamer (bet you didn't know that. Check out Gamer Moms Club (www.gamermomsclub.com) if you love gaming, too). Plus, I get to test a product before it's even available for purchase (comes out May 19). I also get to meet bloggers in real life (that's always nice!) and finally meet the EA team who I've been twittering and emailing with these past few months. And finally, I get to work on my fitness goals in an innovative way and that's exciting because I thrive on creativity and innovation.

Blogher Backtalk: Check it Out

It's funny...I'm really not into vlogs. I thought I would try my hand at it for NewBaby.com, but haven't drummed up enough gumption to do it yet. Blogging is one thing, but vlogging is quite another. The only vlog I watch regularly is Wine Library TV and I think the reason is because Gary Vaynerchuk is just so over the top and entertaining that he sucked me in from the beginning.

But, I have to say I also enjoy Blogher's Backtalk. Blogher Backtalk is a web show that talks about moms and blogging and our sundry outlooks on life and how we blog about them. It's very well produced, the format is engaging, and they allow other vloggers to upload their content to "talk back" about various topics. I really enjoy Blogher Backtalk and appreciate that they let the vast and diverse community of mom bloggers become a part of it with them. Take a look.

Oh, speaking of Blogher, I will be speaking at their conference this year on Saturday, July 25 during their homeschooling panel: MommyBlogging: Blogging as a Homeschooling Tool. Hope to meet you at Blogher!

My Daughters and I On Our Weekly Girls Day Out

Every Saturday morning my daughters, who are 10 and 8, and I venture out on our self-patented Girls Day Out. It's nothing fancy, mind you. We visit different coffee shops in our city and make a full morning of it. They get hot chocolate and scones and I settle down with a cup of coffee or chai latte. Today we decided to also do a little bit of boutique shopping as well and I'm glad we did. It's amazing how many little gems you can find in your local area if you just look.

We stopped by two boutiques in what the Winston-Salem, NC locals affectionately call the Arts District. Walking into the first shop, Pantina (see address below) was like physically stepping into etsy.com -- colors and creativity everywhere! There were handmade, whimsical, funky, and lavish products all under one roof from designer purses and jewelry to French soaps and one-of-a-kind greeting cards. And then to top if off we discovered that Pantina has a coffee shop and art gallery in the back. My girls and I were not only walking around the shop in bliss, but we instantly made plans for next Saturday's Girl Day Out.

I couldn't pass up their La Lavande gift soaps that were stacked so beautifully with all of the various fragrant body lotions, candles and soaps. I bought La Lavande's Pear and Cassis and Vanilla Espresso. If you want to buy some La Lavande and try it out, visit www.lalavandegifts.com.

We opted to go home with rosemary basil crackers and basil pesto. Yum! Can't wait to try them tonight.

Why I Love Nimli and You Should, Too

I tried two wonderful products for the body: the All Natural Sugar Body Scrub made by Scrubz ($8) and the Solay Wellness Organic Moisturizer ($28). I have to say, I absolutely loved both, but for different reasons. The sugar scrub -- in their flower scent -- felt wonderful when I spread it on in the shower. The fragrance is remarkable; it's one of those that you'll never forget, even after you haven't smelled it in a long while. What I loved the most about the scrub was how it felt afterward. Because they combine the sugar with grapeseed, mineral, olive, canola, aloe vera, jojoba, soybean, coconut and supreme oils, I didn't need to use lotion afterwards. Needless to say, I loved it so much that it's gone!

The Solay Moisture Therapy is an effective way to keep your face hydrated and smooth all day long. The only drawback: It doesn't have a real fragrance and instead takes on the scent of the organic safflower oil that it's mainly made with. In all honesty, it smells like the organic mayonnaise that I buy at Whole Foods, but guess what? It works, so I happily use and enjoy it every morning.

JEWLERY

I have never been a big earring kinda gal, but I am in lust with my Hovey Lee Campbell VI earrings ($40). They go with everything I wear forcing me to be more selective about the earrings I wear because I could easily wear these with every outfit. They are very lightweight and just big enough to make a fashion statement.

And I also love my Azuri ZigZag Skinny Bamboo bracelets ($15 each). Every time I wear them (I have two) I get compliments, plus I love the light, but sturdy feel of the bamboo and its weave features. Beautiful.

Vicks Humidifiers Ensure Good Sleep + Reduced Chance of Illness

I have always been the type of person who can sleep like a baby at night no matter the temperature or air quality of the room where I am sleeping. Melinda Doolittle: Still Belting Out Beauties

When Melinda Doolittle was voted off American Idol a few seasons ago I vowed I would never watch the show again and to this day I have been true to my word. A late convert to American Idol, I watched in awe every week as Melinda beautifully belted out song after song with amazing range and flawless intonation. I just knew Melinda would win that year, but as we all know, she didn't. But even though she wasn't a winner on American Idol, she's got a winner on her hands with her debut album, Coming Back to You.

In her signature Melinda Doolittle style, Coming Back to You boasts deeply expressive songs reminiscent of the musical style that suits her voice best -- Motown and classic soul. "Fundamental Things" could easily find itself in a Tina Turner songbook, even while being infused with Doolittle's deep, resonating voice. And "Declaration of Love" easily reminds one of the days of "Fame" and Donna Summer.

Listening to the album you're taken on a retro ride through some of the most beloved musical sounds we've heard over the past half century -- including Motown, 80's soul, and with a few jazzy moments and gospel touches sprinkled throughout.

Interesting Twitter Find: The Great Elephant Poo-Poo Paper Company

I am always amazed at how many interesting and creative people and companies are on Twitter! Twitter is definitely the happening place to be. If you're not there, you're really missing out.

I woke up this morning to find a company called @thepoopoopaper was following me. Intrigued, I clicked through to their web site. And guess what this company makes? They make paper goods out of elephant dung! I know. I know. It sounds a little disgusting, but when I read how they turn elephant poop into paper I was hooked.

Now, I know what I'm buying friends and family next holiday season. I always love an interesting find. And, I know what I'm buying myself the next time I get the urge to treat myself to something special for a change.

I love the fact that The Great Elephant Poo-Poo Paper Company is using nature to create paper and then a percentage of their earnings goes to protect elephants. So smart!

The Dress: Michelle Obama's Cinderella Moment

No matter your political persuasion you can't help but feel renewed and optimistic about the next four years. I know I am, but I have been an Obama supporter since February 2007. I was hip to him early and instinctively knew he was the one person to lead this country in the right direction, even when the rest of my family and friends thought I was swirly-eyed crazy! No matter, they came around...eventually.

So, what did you think about Michelle Obama's dress?

First, anything Michelle Obama wears that shows off her taut arms and killer traps is always going to be a hit! I also think the ivory color of the gown looked stellar against her skin tone. Her earrings matched beautifully and her makeup was subdued which drew all the attention to the dress. I think Michelle Obama looked impeccable last night.

Happy Inauguration Day!

I must say, I have never in all my life been excited about an inauguration. Ever! Sure, I watched the ceremony -- ho, hum. Today, though, I am so elated about Barack Obama's presidency that I won't miss a minute. I wish I could be there, but, honestly, I don't know how I could really handle being enmeshed amongst throngs and throngs of people. Can you say panic attack?

If you happen to live in New York, or will be headed that way before the end of the month, there is an interesting piece of Obama art on display at the Museum of Arts and Design in Manhattan. Benjamin Shine, a British artist, was so moved by the presidential election and Obama's message of change that he created a piece called "Changing States". It is a close-up portraiture of Obama fashioned from pieces of a retired American flag woven through mesh.

"It seemed appropriate to use the nation's flag, reconfigured in order to reflect and celebrate the positive notion of change that is taking place in the United States," Shine said.

"Changing States" will be on display in the lobby of the Museum of Arts and Design through the end of the month. And "Changing States" t-shirts will be sold in their museum store.

Squeezing in your 10's

Resolutions You MUST Keep This Year

The ball has dropped in Times Square, confetti has been swept from the streets and now countless American's have begun to act on their New Year's Resolutions. While changing up your look and getting in better physical shape often top people's lists, more attention should be paid to your internal health -- specifically your heart. "I find people get overwhelmed, thinking that getting better heart health is an impossible task," states Dr. Jack Flyer of CardioCare, a Washington DC practice focusing on preventative care. "It's the minor changes that make a huge difference."

Dr. Flyer offers these easy to keep resolutions:

1) I will get to know my heart. If I do not have a cardiologist, I will ask my primary care physician for a referral in the area. By going in to get screened I will have a better understanding of my risks and what I need to change or improve on in the upcoming year.

2) I will make exercise a part of my daily life. The reports suggest that the 30 minutes of exercise can be cumulative, routine activities in the workplace or home lift that involve 10-minute bursts of moderate activity (a 10 minute walking errand or 10 minutes of working in the yard would apply) that total 30 minutes would be adequate.

3) I will get at least 8 hours of sleep a night knowing that statistics show that people who slept for less than 7.5 hours each night were more likely to suffer a heart attack or stroke or die of cardiac arrest over a 4-year period of time.

4) I will treat myself -- in moderation. Dark chocolate and red wine both contain antioxidants and flavanoids that help relax blood pressure, lower the risk of blood clots, raise HDL (good cholesterol) and lower LDL (bad cholesterol).

5) I will watch for warning signs and when I think there is a problem, rather than ignoring it, I will get to a doctor.

Following these simple and easy to keep resolutions ensures that you and your family have a heart healthy year -- with many more to follow.

I was reading Google's Trend report today and saw that a mom blogger was trending at number 98! This is truly impressive, especially when most of the hot, daily trend topics are about celebs and stories found on big media sites.

Heather from Freebies 4 Mom was featured on Inside Edition in October and they re-aired her segment again yesterday.

It's wonderful when mom bloggers make big waves on the Net and beyond. Congratulations, Heather! Plus, another great thing for me is I found another coupon mom blog. Love those!

Sometimes I have to pinch myself because of all of the fabulous companies I work for and work with. One of those companies is Hybrid Mom where I work as their web director. It's amazing to me to see how far they have come from the time I started working for them in January of this year.

Kelly Rutherford talks about the new Hollywood Hot Mom phenomenon. Magazine Happiness: Boho

It is a rare occasion indeed when a magazine leaps from the newsstand and begs me to buy it. With so many women's glossies to choose from -- all with trite celebrities gracing their covers -- I usually just thumb through the first few that catch my eye and call it a day; after all, I'm a Web girl -- who has time to read a print mag? Despite all this, one magazine really spoke to me, even though I still didn't purchase it that day.

Have you ever heard of Boho magazine? I hadn't either until I went Christmas shopping and saw it in Waldenbooks. I was instantly drawn to it by the type of paper they use -- very thick, recycled paper -- and the cover was absolutely gorgeous. I'm a sucker for great design. Needless to say, Boho really caught my eye. The editors and designers really did a phenomenal job.

Even with all of the praise I just unleashed on Boho, I still didn't buy it then and haven't ordered a subscription -- yet. When I go to the mall this week I'm going to pick up a copy and if it speaks to me I'll order a subscription. I'll let you know what I think when I pick up a copy.

Vaseline Clinical Therapy Lotion

I am really fickle about the lotion I use. I don't like lotion that is too watery and thin, or is scented with too much fragrance. I don't like lotion that flakes when you rub it on, or is too heavy and makes my skin feel like it's suffocating. Because I am so selective about the lotion I use, I decided to try Vaseline's Clinical Therapy Lotion.

I received two bottles of Vaseline's Clinical Therapy Lotion, one that is lightly scented and another that is not scented at all. I have to say, I cannot find a single flaw with this lotion. It goes on smooth with no sign of flaking. The scent is not overpowering in the least, and it doesn't make your skin feel as if it can't breath.

For anyone who has extremely dry skin, the Vaseline Clinical Therapy Lotion will do wonders. While I don't have dry skin myself, I can certainly see how therapeutic it can be for those who suffer with dry skin day in and day out.

Overall, I am very pleased with the lotion and once it runs out, I'll continue to buy it for me and my family.

Be a Role Model: Women & Co. found that 85% of women feel they would have been better off if they had known more about finances and investing earlier in life. The SpringPad Makes Organization Easy

If you are anything like me, you have tried a whole slew of online organizers and have subsequently let them fall by the wayside opting instead to use pen and paper for your organizational needs. As much time as I spend online, from blogging to social networking, you'd think I'd be able to catch onto online organizing like a pro, but that's just not the case. In fact, I have resisted e-organizers at all costs. I do, however, believe I've been sold on one that takes organizing to another level: the SpringPad, a free online organizational tool that is by far the best of its kind I've ever seen or used.

After getting an eye-opening tour of the SpringPad by Spring Partners CEO Jeff Janer and using the SpringPad myself I can personally give it a resounding thumbs-up, especially for busy moms and bloggers like me who need tight organization to make it through the day with all important tasks completed.

Creating to-do lists and daily tasks -- the most essential for me -- is extremely easy to do, and once you have created them, the SpringPad automatically populates the tasks into a calendar that you can either print or refer to online. "The Original Chex Party Mix was the recipe that I used to make with my grandmother, so it came as no surprise that it was voted as 'America's Favorite,'" says Joel. "I like to make it for game-day parties, but will also give it a little extra kick by adding hot sauce to it."

Start to Finish: 15 Minutes

3 cups Corn Chex© cereal
3 cups Rice Chex© cereal
3 cups Wheat Chex© cereal
1 cup mixed nuts
1 cup bite-size pretzels
1 cup garlic-flavor bite-size bagel chips or regular-size bagel chips, broken into 1-inch pieces
6 tablespoons butter or margarine
2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
1 1/2 teaspoons seasoned salt
3/4 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon onion powder

1. In large microwavable bowl, mix cereals, nuts, pretzels and bagel chips; set aside. In small microwavable bowl, microwave butter uncovered on High about 40 seconds or until melted. Stir in seasonings. Pour over cereal mixture; stir until evenly coated.

2. Microwave uncovered on High 5 to 6 minutes, thoroughly stirring every 2 minutes. Spread on paper towels to cool. Store in airtight container.

Sweet PJs for Little Girls

On Friday afternoon I received the Candy PJ set from The Children's Place for my oldest daughter and I have to say: it's quite adorable! As I wrote this review, my daughter was sound asleep in her new pajamas and her hair was tied back with the matching ponytail holder that came with it. Before she went to bed last night, she was in total bliss -- literally smiling from ear to ear -- knowing that she would go to sleep in her brand-new pajamas with her favorite sweet treats emblazoned on it. (Notice the donuts, cupcakes, and cake on the Candy PJ photo on the left).

The pajamas are well-made, sturdy, and the fabric is not too heavy. Sometimes when pajamas are made with fabric that is too heavy, it becomes uncomfortable to wear, but The Children's Place's Candy PJ pajamas are not too hot evidenced by the fact that my daughter stayed snuggled under the covers all night as opposed to kicking out because she was too hot. What makes the Candy PJ set extra sweet is the glittered screen print on the top. It's definitely a nice touch and really makes the pajama set stand out.

The Candy PJ set is perfect for sleepovers or even trips to see relatives. It's lightweight and a ton of fun for girls to wear to let their imagination run wild as they imagine eating all those delectable sweets. Retails for $16.50. Very affordable; love that!

I don't know about you, but when the holidays roll around I shut down. It becomes far too overwhelming for me. Am I the only one who comes down with a seasonal holiday sickness? Don't get me wrong, I love all the decorations and the parties and the gifts and the festivities, but I don't like to put any of that together. I would rather look, admire, and revel in the beauty of the holidays and not actually roll up my sleeves and plan anything.

But, this year I am going to put together a lavish, yet inexpensive party for family and friends. Wish me luck. I'll need it.

Color is Key! Start by choosing a color scheme that reflects the holiday. By simply changing the color of your table linens, you can dramatically change the mood of your table. For Thanksgiving, choose tones reminiscent of fall foliage such as brown, gold and burgundy. For holiday themes choose colors reflective of the holiday you are celebrating or choose silver and white for a winter wonderland. McAfee's Teen/ Mom Internet Safety Survey

Yesterday I had an amazing conversation with McAfee's Chief Cyber Security Mom, Tracy Mooney, and Family Internet Safety Advisor, Parry Aftab. McAfee has just released a comprehensive study about teen's Net use and it has many people concerned. Of note, here are a few statistics I found particularly troubling:

18% of teens have been stalked or approached by a stranger or someone they don't know and 28% report that this has happened to a friend or someone they know
20% say their friends have been cyberpranked
34% of teen girls have given out personal information online to someone they don't know offline, including one if four (24%) who have shared personal photos and/ or physical descriptions of themselves (2x as many as boys)

As a mom of three, Tracy Mooney, recommends keeping an open dialogue going with your kids about the dangers of using the Internet and also stresses that you should teach your children how to behave on the Internet because, after all, it is a world too. And parents need to pay attention and understand the technology that kids are using these days and have a grasp of the capabilities of the various tech devices kids use each day such as if they can connect with others or if they have Internet access.

Parry Aftab stressed that all parents should use the 3Cs approach to new technology: content, contact and cost.

From her McAfee blog she writes:

Content includes things our children can see, access and do online. It might include false information, sexually-explicit graphics, or hate-based material. It also might include fun and entertaining activities for our children.

Contact involves ways that our children can communicate online with others or that others can reach out and communicate with our children.

Cost may encompass commercial risks and abuses, such as data collection; advertising, marketing and promotional online activities; or things you can buy on Amazon.com. It may also involve piracy and our children, and possibly being sued by the music or motion picture industry for illegal downloads. (Source)

November's Real Simple

It's funny because I rarely, if ever, pick up a magazine on the newsstand. I was just talking to a seasoned magazine publisher yesterday and she mentioned that 73% of magazines end up being shredded at the end of each month because people typically don't buy magazines off the shelves. I must be typical because it's a rare occasion when I plunk down cold, hard cash for a magazine.

But last week I bought the latest issue of Real Simple and it was a wonderful read, even though I still have about a quarter of the issue to read still.

Two articles that really stuck out to me were Your Fastest, Easiest, Tastiest Thanksgiving Ever on page 250 and Dress Up Your Eyes on page 262. I am definitely going to recreate -- to the best of my ability -- the Thanksgiving meal they so artfully laid out and so graciously provided detailed recipes for. This article will save me countless hours trying to come up with Thanksgiving dinner off the top of my head. Check out those articles; they're well worth the read or buy a 1-year subscription to Real Simple. I did because the $4.50 newsstand price is a killer.

I am such a blessed and lucky person! I was privileged to be a part of the first and second Walt Disney World Mom Blogger Mixers, the first in April and the second one this past weekend.

Survival Tips for Couples in Hard Economic Times

Hard economic times put a heaven burden on couples. When money is tight, people get tense and agitated because bills can't be paid and families have to cut back on little luxuries they are accustomed to. Josh Klapow, Ph.D, Associate Professor at the University of Alabama at Birmingham suggests these tips for couples who are facing the money burden.

1. Keep a cool head. "When your emotions are high - be it anger, sadness, frustration - thoughts get cloudy. Relax, breathe, wait 2-10 minutes then start to talk," Klapow said.

2. Start easy. Arguments often start because of a critical remark or an angry tone. "Try to bring up problems and mistakes gently and without blame," he said.

3. Don't assume. "Talk about your feelings, not what you think your spouse or partner is feeling. Describe your feelings in first person with 'I' and explain why," Klapow said.

4. Think then speak. "The goal of the conversation should be to problem-solve, not to win. Remember, once the words are out you cannot take them back," he said.

5. Repair and recover. "Don't let the discussion get out of control. End on a positive, or at least neutral, note. Lean on patience, change the topic or offer a positive comment to let the other person know you're part of the same team," Klapow said.

Revving Up for the Second Presidential Debate

Usually we wouldn't interject politics here on TheMomSalon.com, but in the current climate in which we live, we would be remiss if we ignored it altogether, especially on a day when the two presidential nominees are slated to face off this evening in Nashville, Tennessee.

We make no qualms about being overtly liberal leaning. We want Obama to be president and Biden to be vice president and take this country in a new direction. There, we said it! But we also can understand those out there who believe in the McCain-Palin ticket and don't begrudge anyone their political affiliations. We simply choose to believe the Obama-Biden ticket will be much better for the country and better for women's rights.

Now that things have gotten increasingly ugly between the two campaigns and tensions have gotten very ugly on the campaign trail (Palin rally attendees yelling "kill him", him being Obama), we couldn't remain silent today and want to know how you feel about the negative trajectory these campaigns are going.

Marketing to Mom Bloggers

Over the past few months we've noticed that mom bloggers have been heavily on the minds of marketers and PR people. Everyone wants to get into the mom blog space and utilize us to spread the message about their product. In all honesty, that's what we do best. We talk about the products we love and rave about the products we think other mothers will love and find useful as well.

Moms are inherently wired to talk, just ask our husbands. When we learn about a new product or service, we spread the wealth of information because that's how we're wired to think. Plus, let's not kid around, we want to be the ones to spread the news, we want to be the influencers and the brand ambassadors.

That said, there is a specific way to approach us. Keep in mind that a great many of us receive countless pitches each day. Don't underestimate us when we say this. Our inboxes are filled to the brim with press releases, so your pitch has to resonate and cause us to remember it. Little things help us remember products like an astute PR rep who addresses us by our first name instead of simply 'Hello" or "Hi, there". Plus, PR people must follow up on their pitches, but the follow-ups need to be well-timed. Don't follow up the next day with this: "Any interest?" Most of us will chuck that email right in the trash. And finally, we know it will take some time, but take a moment to learn about our blogs. Personalized pitches tend to be effective. Avoid peppering a pitch with BS like saying, "I just love your blog" when it's clear you just stumbled across it for the first time. Mom bloggers can smell PR BS a mile away. Believe us when we say that.

It is amazing to us how rampant domestic violence is in America's homes. One in four women have experienced domestic violence in their lifetime. Women and mothers, in particular, are oftentimes scared to death to break away from violent husbands and boyfriends and instead opt for more abuse in order to keep their home life "stable" for the children.

National Domestic Violence Awareness Month is next month and the Allstate Foundation and "Ugly Betty" star Anna Ortiz have joined forces to help women break the chains of domestic violence. The Allstate Foundation is imploring women and men to "Tell a Gal P.A.L." - Pass it On, Act and Learn - about domestic violence and how economic empowerment can lead to a safe future for survivors.

Through a partnership with the non-profit organization Dress for Success, select Allstate agencies across the country will collect nearly new purses and professional bags now through October 3. The donated items will be distributed to domestic violence survivors and women in need to outfit them with confidence they enter or re-enter the workforce and get back on their feet financially.

Do You Consider Yourself An Attention Seeker?

Did you know that mom bloggers are now considered "attention seekers" by those who categorize social networking users? Yes, mom bloggers are labeled "attention seekers" because we crave attention and comments from others often by posting photos and customizing our profiles (source). OK, we guess that's a pretty fair description of our online habits, but the term doesn't sit well with us.

Instead of calling us "attention seekers", maybe we should be called "master networkers" or Type-A social media users", not "attention seekers". It makes us sound so darn vain and like the only reason we blog at all is so people will see us: Look! Look! I'm a mom blogger! We don't think so.

Being a mom blogger is so much more than simply craving comments and wanting PR companies to contact us. It's about creating our own space on the Net, throwing out opinions and finding our voice in the wilderness. Attention Seekers? Nope, but nice try. What do you think?

The drawings, by such artists as Manet, Degas, Dali and Miro, are from the private collection of Juan Abello and his wife, Anna Gamazo, of Madrid, who were recently named among the world's 200 top art collectors by ArtNews. As often as possible we will post round-ups of mom bloggers who have made it to the news. Although there have already been many, many news stories about moms who blog in the news, we think it's a good idea to keep a running tab for posterity's sake and also to share the good news about how influential our genre of blogs really is.

On Monday, reporters at the New York Times wrote an article about mothers' reactions to Sarah Palin and mentioned UrbanMamas is their coverage. Urban Mamas was noticed by the reporters because of a heated conversation about the Republican Vice Presidential pick's mothering style. She went back to work three days after having her fifth child who has special needs.
If you haven't heard yet, Wal-Mart tapped 11 influential mom bloggers to vlog about ways to save money. They received a flip camera and will visit the Wal-Mart corporate headquarters in October. None were paid by Wal-Mart, but each hopes that this opportunity turns into more opportunities and increased traffic to their sites. Read more here.

Google, you sly deveil, you. Now that everyone has settled in and started using Firefox religiously and Internet Explorer 7 on occasion, you come out with your very own Open Source Browser, Chrome. Thanks! Now yet another thing on our plate to sift through.

Don't get us wrong: We will be downloading the new browser and taking it for a spin today with millions of others. Google promised that Chrome will run faster and be more streamlined than other browsers. That's always a good thing. We just hope none of our sites look like a mess in Chrome. Keeping fingers crossed about that. We'll update this post after we've given Chrome a try.

Everything is bigger (although we're sure there is an option to minimize font sizes, but the default look is great), the tabs at the top showing every site you're on and is very simple to see and use (better than Firefox), plus because Chrome is Open Source, all of our Firefox bookmarks automatically converted. We're impressed. You should definitely download it and give it a try.

YadaHome.com: A New Type of Web 2.0

Social networks are a dime a dozen these days. Some are really creative and inventive and others, eh, not so much. There is a new social network on the scene, though, that is sure to make parents, particularly moms, stop and take notice: YadaHome.com.

At first glance YadaHome doesn't appear to be a classic social network, although you can create a profile, join groups, and meet members, but the homepage is beautiful enough that it draws you into exploring beyond its opening page. And in all honesty it is a treat to explore on YadaHome. They have literally thought of everything a busy mom needs at her fingertips from coupons, shopping deals, and delicious recipes to listings of local events and even fun stuff like games and horoscopes.

The main attraction at YadaHome, though, is the user page or dashboard.They have designed a virtual fridge where you can create and print shopping and to-do lists, fill out important dates on your calendar, list emergency and everyday contacts, keep a journal, upload family photos, and read your YadaHome email. There are even more features on your virtual fridge; you have to see it to really appreciate it. The YadaHome.com virtual fridge is the most creative aspect on a site we've seen in a long time and is a real reason to sign up as a member.

Arguably YadaHome has a ways to go yet to become a more polished site with greater interaction between members and offering more features such as a greater selection of local events and local guides, but for a startup they are definitely on the right track and are well worth bookmarking because of their attention to detail and creative elements.

PC magazine recently published a list of the Top 100 Undiscovered Web sites of 2008. One that really stood out to us was Daily Lit.

Daily Lit allows you to read books one bit at a time and each installment is delivered to your inbox on a schedule you create. So, if you've never read Little Women, for example, you can do so in bits and pieces, 255 pieces to be exact and it's all free. Some of the newer titles cost a nominal fee, but there are a whole host of classic to contemporary, romance, and women's fiction books to choose from along with a variety of other categories.

We especially like Daily Lit because they understand that busy people don't have a lot of time, but reading a book in bit-sized portions can help someone get through a classic book they would otherwise labor through.

There is a new network of sites called the LOUD3R network that aggregates information based on topic, but claims they take a different approach to content discovery by using semantic searches and people to find topic-based content all over the Web.

LOUD3R sites are created by assembling a source list of websites and a semantic glossary of terms that teach the content engine how to identify the best news stories, photos, videos, and other content from hundreds of Websites related to a particular topic. We use a combination of human editorial input combined with semantic software to assemble all the best content, from a web-wide perspective, for any given topic. Properly meshing brilliant people and smart technology is a win-win on all fronts. The LOUD3R network will probably become a force to be reckoned with in the coming year, but only if they can succeed at creating viral buzz about their network and convince fickle online users -- like busy moms -- that their network is indeed better than the rest. That's a monumental task, but certainly doable.

Michelle Obama: One Amazing Mom

From all accounts it seems everyone (or at least most moms on our Twitter feed) is in agreement: Michelle Obama did an amazing job during her speech last night at the Democratic National Convention. It was filled with raw emotion, almost bringing herself to tears, and solid examples of how much she loves her family, her husband, her children and America.

The cutest part of the night, though, was when Michelle and Barack's two daughters -- Malia and Sasha -- came out on stage to join Michelle and to talk to their Dad via satellite. It's official: Their 7-year-old, Sasha, is now one of the cutest kids on the planet.
